We are delighted to introduce Zoe Smith, an extraordinary athlete, World Champion Para Surfer and one of our newest CiaO Grant recipients. Zoe’s journey is not just about winning medals, it is a powerful example of how life’s greatest challenges can open the door to new purpose, renewed identity and unexpected joy.
In 2015, Zoe’s world was turned upside down when a road traffic collision resulted in the loss of her leg. The physical and emotional impact was profound. Zoe faced years of pain, depression and a struggle to reconnect with the person she once was. But in the heart of this challenge, she discovered something very powerful, a new beginning in the ocean!
As Zoe says…
“Surfing has given me freedom, strength, and community. I never imagined I could even swim again, let alone surf. Every time I’m in the water, I feel alive and incredibly blessed.”
With incredible determination, Zoe learned to surf using a prosthetic leg. What began as a personal challenge soon became a passion and one that would lead her onto the world stage.
Today, Zoe stands proudly as:
- ISA Para Surfing Worlds Gold & Silver Medallist
- British Number One in her category
- Ambassador for adaptive surfing and inclusion in sport
Zoe is now a powerful role model for women in sport, amputees and anyone seeking hope beyond hardship. With the support of the CiaO Grant, put towards specialist surfing equipment and prosthetics, Zoe can continue to train, compete and inspire others. Put brilliantly by Zoe,
“Surfing has given me a new zest for life. I hope my journey shows others that there is strength in vulnerability, and there is always a way forward.”
We are proud to support Zoe on this journey and celebrate everything she has achieved and all that is still to come.
“Zoe’s resilience and determination have not only transformed her mental health but also led her to become a world champion surfer. Hearing her story was truly inspiring and a reminder of the strength we all hold within us.”
